Philanthropy” is a word given to us by the Greeks from ages past. It translates best into “love of humanity,” and shows us that the altruistic desire to improve human welfare was evident from the earliest years in Greek society.
For example, upon his death in 347 B.C., the famous philosopher Plato willed the proceeds of the family farm to the academy he had founded in prior years. His generous gift subsequently helped students and faculty to keep the academy running for over another 400 years!
When we take positive actions as individuals, we get a real sense of fulfillment. We also—as Plato’s story illustrates—“multiply” our individual good deeds by serving as leadership models and inspiration for others to follow, as they create their own worthy missions…even into perpetuity!
When you join the Purpose on the Planet community and become a ReWrite Our Story member, you may not think of yourself as a humanitarian, but you should! As well as protecting the planet, you are providing sustainable employment and creating economic opportunities for vulnerable villages in Africa. As a result, local community members are then able to provide meals to their families, enable their own children to attend school, and gain access to health care with wages earned through mangrove reforestation and landscape restoration.
And that’s not the only area where you can lead the way and inspire others! The video on this page provides several insights into the monthly “Sustainable Solutions” that is provided on a complimentary basis to all members of our donor community. First and foremost, these carbon-certified materials were developed to empower you to reduce your own future emissions, by refining personal food, energy, and consumption choices. However, it is our broader hope is that they will enable you to “model the path” for others, in creating the sustainable lifestyle patterns that are now so fundamental in protecting a prosperous future for us all!
In other words, so that just like Plato, you will help ReWrite Our Story, not only for the world we live in today, but also for many future generations to come!

– Plant 100 mangroves to remove an estimated 1 metric ton of CO2.
